What is TerraSlate Paper?

TerraSlate Paper is the world's most proven waterproof and rip-proof paper on the planet. Compatible with ballpoint pens, copy machines, laser printers, and digital presses, TerraSlate is a fully synthetic paper that never needs laminating and can withstand extreme conditions and long-term use without replacement.

TerraSlate was developed to be waterproof, rip-proof, and extremely durable. It can withstand submersion in water for extended periods and withstand extreme temperature variations while repelling grease, solvents, and chemicals.

TerraSlate offers superior laser image quality with the appearance, smoothness, and printability of standard paper; and works great in almost any standard laser printer or digital press. Most importantly, TerraSlate is more cost-effective to use and has a much more professional look than laminating.

Is TerraSlate actually waterproof, or just water-resistant?

TerraSlate is 100% waterproof and made from military-grade polyester, not laminated paper or coated stock, which means it can be submerged in water without cracking, peeling, or delaminating. Spills wipe off easily, sanitizing does not damage it, and moisture will not compromise the structure or print quality.

Can it rip?

No, TerraSlate is designed to be rip-proof under normal use. It is made from military-grade polyester rather than traditional paper fibers, so it will not tear, fray, crack, or split as laminated or paper menus do. While no material is physically indestructible under extreme force, TerraSlate cannot be ripped by hand and is engineered to withstand heavy daily handling, bending, spills, and repeated cleaning without breaking down. Durability is one of the main reasons hundreds of thousands of customers rely on TerraSlate to eliminate constant reprinting and lamination costs.

What is TerraSlate Paper made out of?

TerraSlate is made from a military-grade polyester that enables its extreme performance in adverse conditions. TerraSlate is durable, rip-proof, and waterproof to withstand rain, heat, and temperature variations while deterring grease, solvents, and chemicals. Simply wipe clean and re-use. It can even be run through a commercial dishwasher.

What is the difference between TerraSlate and PolySlate?

TerraSlate and PolySlate are both waterproof, rip-proof synthetic sheets that eliminate lamination and outlast traditional paper, but they serve slightly different needs. TerraSlate is our flagship material made from a higher-density, military-grade polyester that delivers unmatched durability, rigidity, and long-term performance — it stands up to heavy handling, repeated cleaning, high traffic, and demanding environments while still printing brilliantly through laser and digital presses. PolySlate, on the other hand, is a value-oriented alternative that offers waterproof, rip-proof performance with the same excellent printability on laser printers and copiers, but with slightly lower density and flexibility, making it more cost-effective for applications where the absolute highest durability isn't required. Both are fully waterproof, rip-proof, and printable on both sides, but TerraSlate is engineered for the toughest, most frequently used applications, while PolySlate gives you strong performance with greater cost efficiency.

What thickness should I choose?

TerraSlate is available in 5 mil (24lb bond equivalent, lightweight), 8 mil (80lb cover equivalent), 10 mil (120lb cover equivalent), and 14 mil (180lb cover equivalent, thickest and most rigid). The 14 mil option is our most popular for menus, as it offers the most durability and a premium, rigid feel.

Will TerraSlate work with my printer?

TerraSlate waterproof paper is compatible with many digital presses, including Kodak, Xerox, Ricoh, Canon, Konica Minolta, and more. Is TerraSlate economical?

Yes, TerraSlate printer paper is extremely cost-effective to use. It is more affordable than laminated materials and takes much less time to produce. Our rip-proof, waterproof paper is designed to last over 100 years, even with heavy use, and is also inexpensive enough to use daily.

Does TerraSlate's Nano Coating (included on menus and by request on printed materials) protect people from all disease-causing microbes?

While TerraSlate's proprietary nano-coating significantly reduces the growth of microbes, it does not protect users or others against all disease-causing microbes. This technology is not a substitute for good hygiene and/or cleaning practices.

Do I need bleed or margin?

Bleed requirements depend on your specific design and whether artwork extends to the edge of the page, and in most cases, full-bleed designs do require bleed to ensure clean trimming. If your file needs crop marks or bleed added, our design team can prepare it properly for $15 so it prints and trims exactly as intended without any unwanted white borders.

Are TerraSlate & Hydronote Flammable / Flame and Fire Resistant?

TerraSlate and Hydronote are both considered non-flammable. However, a material is considered "flammable" if it ignites and burns with a self-sustained flame at a rate greater than 0.1 inches per second along its major axis - which TerraSlate and Hydronote do not.

What are the best utensils for writing or drawing on TerraSlate?

Yes, if your order is double-sided, you should carefully review and approve both the front and back since both sides will print and be visible to your guests.

Is this exactly how it will print?

The proof shows exactly how your order will print in layout, size, and structure, though slight color variations may occur between screen display and final print due to RGB versus CMYK calibration differences. Our G7-certified printing process ensures professional color accuracy.

Will this design print correctly on TerraSlate?

TerraSlate is engineered specifically for laser printers and high-end digital presses, including Kodak, Xerox, Ricoh, Canon, and Konica Minolta systems, producing crisp HD color with brilliant results on both sides of the sheet. Our G7-certified color process ensures professional, color-accurate printing that meets industry standards, so your design prints beautifully with sharp detail, rich color, and consistent quality.

Why might colors look slightly different than my screen?

Colors may appear slightly different from screen to print because screens display color using RGB light, while professional printing uses CMYK toner, and every monitor is calibrated differently. TerraSlate is G7-certified, which means our printing process meets strict industry color standards for accuracy and consistency. While minor variations between digital screens and printed pieces are normal, your final TerraSlate product will deliver crisp, professional, color-accurate results with brilliant, colorfast printing that resists fading even in harsh environments such as direct sunlight and heavy handling.

Is the fold correct?

The proof shows fold placement exactly as it will be produced, and our production team scores and folds each menu precisely to match the approved layout.

Is the size right?

The proof reflects the exact finished size of your menu, and TerraSlate offers sizes from 4x6 to 13x19, along with A3, A4, and A5 options, as well as custom sizing.

What happens if I approve this and there's a mistake?

Once you approve your proof, production begins quickly, often within minutes, so it is important to review carefully. If you notice an issue after approval, contact us immediately at (720) 254-1887, and we will do everything possible to assist if production has not yet started.

Can I still make changes?

You may request changes at any time before approving your proof, but once approval is given and production begins, stopping the order may result in additional design time, production costs, or delays.

What if I catch something later?

If you notice an issue after approval, contact us immediately at (720) 254-1887 or info@terraslate.com. If production has not started, changes may still be possible, but once printing begins, the approved proof serves as the final reference.

Why do I have to pay before production?

Because each order is custom-printed and cannot be reused or resold, we require payment before production. This allows us to maintain factory-direct pricing, eliminate setup fees, and deliver the industry's fastest turnaround with free overnight shipping.

What happens if there's a mistake?

We stand behind our philosophy of 'Printed Right or We'll Print It Right.' If an issue occurs, contact us immediately, and our team will evaluate the situation promptly to determine the best solution. We can be reached at (720) 254-1887 or info@terraslate.com.
